Garlic Roasted Radishes at Real Food Dietitians

Yes! Finally, the first shares are packed and ready to go! Spring is on the way out next week and it feels like winter just ended. With a few lows in the high 30s this week, we are ready for a definitive transition to summer. The additional week before the start of CSA shares proved necessary and it feels good to start now with a bounty of fresh greens, chives and radishes this week. Everyone’s patience and encouragement in the delay was greatly appreciated. Our many thanks to you!

We have a great team here this season. Several folks are here from previous seasons, as well as some new faces in the mix. We will be introducing our team throughout the year here in the newsletter. Stay tuned to get to know the folks growing the bounty in your CSA box.

We planted peppers and basil this week in our new caterpillar tunnel garden. Located next to our big high tunnels at the main garden site, these mini tunnels are exactly like the ones at the Buena Vista pick-up location that we use in the cut flower garden there. Like little greenhouses, the caterpillar tunnels stay covered all season to promote the growth of warm loving crops. Our cool night time temps make it very challenging to get economically viable yields from heat lovers like basil and peppers. If all goes well, we will hopefully have basil and peppers aplenty to share later in the season.

Along with weekly seeding and transplanting in the field, we spent much of this week weeding and mowing in the garden. The gardens are growing strong and looking tidy. This week will be another push to get our drip irrigations systems in place and more plantings in before the solstice.

If there are any gardeners out there in need of plants, we are in our final weeks of plant sales. This is a great time to get some plants going in the garden. We have a nice selection of cool and warm veggie crops and some great herbs that would be a fabulous supplement to the shares. These plants are available at our farmers markets in Buena Vista and Salida. Click this link for details of those market times and locations. We also stock a selection of plants at The Lettucehead in BV and Simple Foods in Salida.
