The Girl With Kale-idoscope Eyes

This week we are thankful for the rainy weather.  The rain always seems to provide us with a much needed break at just the right time.  Rain reduces the time in our schedule dedicated to moving and setting up irrigation water.  As long as there is no hail involved in these summer storms, the garden seems to be even happier and more abundant with rain water than it is with irrigation water.

Garden Shares

arugula – fresh garlic (from Austin’s) – oregano – cilantro – winterbor kale – kohlrabi – green leaf lettuce – napa cabbage – pac choi – scallions – turnips

Fruit Shares

1 bag cherries

Next week we should have apricots and beets!

Here are some great recipe links and ideas sent to us by garden and fruit share member Rebecca Rice.  I love how Rebecca is dedicated to using  all things edible in the share including stems and leaves of the main crop like radish, turnip, and kohlrabi.  She has simple and delicious ways of getting through her share before the next box comes her way.  Thanks for the contributions Rebecca.

Greens Stir-Fry Marinade

Both marinades below are Asian-inspired and incorporate 1 lb. of protein, any quantity or type of greens (based on what our fine Weathervane farmers are harvesting!), and start by sauteeing onions/garlic/ginger in copious amounts of sesame and/or peanut oil or safflower oil). I usually serve over rice or lettuce (if I haven’t finished yet for the week) and top with cashews. Last night, I doubled recipe #1 below and used all the yakuna, choi – stems are my favorite way to give some crunch, most of the turnip and radish greens, and the garlic. We had already enjoyed the chard – delicious – steamed earlier in the week.

Marinade #1

3/4 c. chx or veg broth

3 T. tamari

1 tsp. rice wine vinegar

1/4 (or more) tsp. red pepper flakes

2 tsp. cornstarch

Marinade #2

2 T. tamari

2 T. lime juice

3 cloves garlic (in this marinade, the garlic goes in at this step after sauteeing)

1 1/2 T. (or more) chopped ginger

2 tsp. coriander

1 tsp. sugar

1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes

I love kale!  You can even make a crispy nutritious snack food from kale.  My mother in law, Joan has been making the most delicious kale chips.  Here is a collection of kale chip videos to help you come up with your favorite kale chip recipe.

A few logistical reminders for farm pick-ups…..

  • To reduce any confusion, when picking up at the farm be sure to use the whiteboard to reference what to take for the fruit shares.   The fruit share may be packed in different containers or you might take multiple bags depending on the type of fruit in the share.  The board also lists the garden share contents.  The garden shares will always be packed in the standard share box.  If you have any questions please try to find us during the staffed hours. If someone doesn’t appear it is likely we are in the house.  Feel free to knock.
  • Please come to the farm from 4-7pm on Fridays and 9am-5pm on Saturdays.  We have a number of logistical things to accomplish between share packing and pick-up on Fridays and need that time between to get ready for the weekend.  Especially as our season continues, we will have longer harvest days on Fridays and are not able to guarantee the shares will be ready until 4pm.  We understand that there are circumstances that may prevent you from picking up at the designated times.  Please let us know so we can help you in finding another appropriate time to get your share.
  • We had two shares that were not retrieved last week.  We would love to get the Kale Yeah! bags to whoever didn’t get their share last week.  Send us an email if this was you.
