Farmers Market   Farming Practices - High Altitude Farming

Farming at an elevation of 8000 ft. presents challenges of a short growing season and extreme weather. We view these challenges as opportunities. Just like the arrow of a weathervane points out to the observer the direction from which the wind originates, we observe the specifics of the local environment when making decisions about crop and variety selection, trusting our observations to guide us to plants most adapted to our region. We grow a diversity of crops that are suited to the cool, high-altitude climate nuances and create partnerships with other small-scale Colorado growers with similar practices to provide low land, hot weather loving crops such as corn, peppers and peaches for our CSA shares and farmers market. This approach creates a network of small farmers working together, allowing greater opportunity to market their crops on a local-to-regional scale.

High-altitude challenges serve as incentives for creativity and resourcefulness. We employ several innovative methods in our farming practices such as extending our season through the use of coldframes and row cover. We utilize local knowledge such as mulching perennial plants heavily to prevent desiccation from the harsh winter wind. No matter what elevation or situation, farming is a constant challenge and as with any adventure, the greater the challenge the greater the reward.
