The long awaited and much anticipated first day of the shares is here. Thanks so much to everyone participating in the Weathervane CSA program. Your commitment to our farm helps tremendously in keeping our local agricultural business thriving. You will notice that the shares this week all look a lot alike. The early season brings us an abundance of greens and other spring delicacies. The diversity in all shares will increase in the coming weeks and the Salad Share will start to look different in selection and variety than the Small and Large shares.
We have a great crew of folks this season working hard in the fields. Over the next several weeks we will introduce you to our team of employees, interns, and working members that keep Weathervane Farm running. There are lots of moving parts here and lots of hands make it all possible. Leading up to the share season, life on the farm has been dynamic. The spring started off warm with trees breaking buds about 2 weeks earlier than observed in previous years. May brought consistently cooler night time temps than normal. Spring winds have presented challenges to our row cover system. All early crops going into the garden get a white blanket tent covering to keep them warm and growing in our cool April and May temperatures. The monsoon patterns common in this area are already in effect. Hail visited us several times this season already with some damage to report. Hopefully our dues are all paid up with the hail gods for the rest of the season. Warm weather in recent days has us in a new pattern of taking the row cover off of the now larger plants and starting to see rapid growth and bounty in the garden.
